Understanding International Widows’ Day
International Widows’ Day is observed annually on June 23 to raise awareness about the poverty, injustice, and discrimination faced by widows and their dependents globally. It is a United Nations observance established following a 2010 General Assembly resolution, with the first official UN celebration held in 2011.
The acquired food items in the photo include packed kilograms of posho, beans, and sugar. The non-food items secured so far in the photo include dozens of learning books for the children, pens, pencils, sanitary towels, and soap. Karungi Child-Mother's Network celebrates and honours International Widows Day today, 23rd/06/2026. Food and non-food items were distributed today to widows. We took information about their health and personal living conditions for better service delivery to them. Widows shared their problems and pains they are facing with us. Because it was a working day and schooling day, not all the children of the widows attended, but they received all the scholastic materials required for school this term. Widows were empowered, and felt loved and not forgotten. For some widows who are sick and have mobility issues, food and non-food items were delivered to their homes.
We discussed about getting justice law rights for the widows facing land issues, widows abuse, social abuse, and widow inheritance to the brother of the deceased. We discussed about economic empowerment, and how to help support them so that they can work and learn to be able to look after their children and themselves.
We discussed the formation of a widows’ SACCO (Savings and Credit Cooperative Organization) group where widows can share business ideas, learn financial basics, save regularly, and invest collectively to improve their lives.
At Karungi Child-Mother's Network, we would like to say a big thank you to We Trust in Him organization for all their support and donations towards this day that turned out as a success.
